SAMMY REMEMBERED – Sammy Rotman, left, shown with her sister Rebecca, is being remembered with a cross-country bicycle trip scheduled to stop in Sanderson next week. Sammy, who died in 2009 of cancer, inspired the “SammyRides” trip by four “70-plus” grandfathers in support of awareness and research into childhood cancer.
SANDERSON – The Terrell County Historical Society will welcome the “SammyRides” group of four “70-plus” bicycle riders on a cross country trip to support cancer research next week.
The public is welcome to attend the event at Legion Hall from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, March 18, particularly cancer survivors of any age.
Guests can bring finger foods to supplement a chicken-salad dinner.
The bicycle trip by four grandfathers started last week at Sun City, AZ, near Phoenix and will end May 1 at Sun City, FL.
Riders include Michael Libenson, whose nine-year-old granddaughter Sammy Rotman died in 2009 from Osteosarcoma, a form of cancer.
Ride sponsors offered to recognize any child-cancer sufferers in Sanderson but organizer Lea Hawn said she was unable to find any still living here.
Libenson and three other “70-plus” grandfathers are making the 2,400-mile “SammyRides” bike ride while Libenson’s wife, Lois, follows in the “sag wagon” and provides medical support for the team.
Joining Libenson on bikes are Adolph Lex, John Bear and Mike Brown.
The ride is sponsored by Team Will, a non-profit organization of cyclists dedicated to drawing awareness and supporting research to help families whose children are undergoing cancer treatment.
Its slogan is “Grandparents Riding for the Health of Grandchildren.”
